Product Description
The research is clear: the ability to read for understanding requires a great deal of knowledge and vocabulary, as well as reading skills. By linking early literacy to content area learning, we can provide children with the purposeful, knowledge-building experiences they need to be successful readers and writers. In this comprehensive and practical resource, early literacy experts Susan Neuman and Kathy Roskos give you the tools to do this. They share five essential early literacy practices—creating a supportive learning environment; shared book reading; songs, rhymes, and word play; developmental writing; and play—and show how and why to apply these in math, science, social studies, and art so children acquire the knowledge and the skills they need for academic success. For use with Grades PreK–K.

Customer Reviews
TSM Said: Excellent early chilhood resource for new or seasoned educator ( Feb. 20th 2010 )
This resource is easy to read and provides the new or seasoned early childhood educator with current age appropriate practices, strategies, approaches, tips, and guidelines.
M. Chmiel Said: You'll want to give this to your child's daycare provider ( Jul. 27th 2007 )
This is a great, easy read filled with illustrations and practical tips. It is useful for day care providers (even informal ones) and parents of pre-school aged children. This book helps you build "print-rich" environments to help use the natural curiosity children have in order to promote literacy. This, in turn, helps children come to school ready to succeed.
We can plug 'baby Einstein'-type tapes all we want, but in the end, children depend on adults who take an active role in helping children develop their natural curiosity. The ideas in this book are easy to implement. No daycare should be without a copy of this book.
